Hello North Beach Families! We miss spending our days with your kids! I’m sharing an article today that may be helpful if you’re struggling to create a new normal in your household. Schedules and routines are key during times of crisis. Here are a few other tips that might be helpful:
If you’re trying to work from home, create a signal in your home for when children can interrupt and when they need to wait (maybe a red light/green light circle – one side green, one red).
Help your kids be more independent. Before jumping up to do something for them, ask yourself, “can they do this for themselves?” Encourage and praise independence and emphasize the teamwork that will help us all (families and communities) get through this crisis together.
With older kids, put them in charge of making dinner once a week. So, it may be eggs and toast, but it will give parents a break and allow kids to help out!
If you’re healthy and able, make sure you’re getting outside with your kids every day.
Kids need social time. Be creative in getting some friend time for kids even while practicing social distancing – talk time or face time on the phone.
If at all possible, schedule daily time to play games, tell stories, sing, read books, do puzzles, dance and be silly with your kids. It will help you feel better, too.

I will continue to be available through e-mail during the school closure. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns about your student’s mental health or if you need help with basic needs – groceries, etc. I am happy to share resources and, if needed, schedule a time to talk by phone or through Teams. Please e-mail me at arreid@seattleschools.org
I know this is an incredibly stressful time for families. Take good care, and please reach out if you need help.
