Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has long been a focus at North Beach, and this year support in this area is more important than ever. SEL may look a little different from classroom to classroom, but there are multiple components that are happening across all classrooms at every grade level at North Beach. These include:

  • Class meetings to create a welcoming environment, make connections, build community and engage in group problem solving.

  • Weekly teacher-led SEL lessons with a focus this year on regulating emotions, managing stress and building resiliency supported by the school counselor, Ms. Reid. These lessons are based on SPS guidance, the RULER program, Second Step and MindUp.

  • The Book of the Month program in which each class reads a new book each month focusing on a particular skill or character trait. Students then engage in discussions and supplemental activities. The books tend to highlight authors, illustrators and/or characters from groups who have been historically underrepresented.

  • Classroom practices and tools interwoven throughout the school day such as the school-wide Mindful Moment, the Classroom Charter, checking in on the Mood Meter and taking brain breaks.

  • The North Beach Way behavior matrix which establishes expectations for behavior so that the school day is consistent and predictable for all students.
